wisdom teeth, and a proper good bye to new york
My dad used to point at the ladies walking for exercise in my suburbs; when I was little, he’d slow the car down, look at me in the rearview mirror, and say, “she’s a walker” and then laugh. Well, I’m officially a walker - at least this week.
I can’t run for a few days because I had my wisdom teeth out on Friday. The surgery ended up being surprisingly complicated because the roots of my teeth had grown down next to the nerve. When I went in for the consultation the day before the surgery, the doctor told me that I had a 30-40% risk of nerve damage, and could potentially lose feeling in my lower lip, teeth and gums - but that the teeth absolutely had to come out, because the risk of infection from not getting them out was worse. At the same time, I was coming down with what I’m pretty sure was strep throat, and my teeth were starting to get infected. In spite of less than perfect health, we went through with the surgery, and I am ever thankful to report that it went well. I can feel my teeth and I can still kiss.
In any case, the quiet time has given me the opportunity to think about everything I’m thankful for and how lucky I am. I’m lucky that so far, wisdom teeth have been among the worst of my concerns and that the surgery ended up being ok. I’m thankful that I’ve been given the opportunity to go to a really good law school, in a really beautiful place, and that I’m going to learn incredible things, and I’m excited. Most of all, though, I’m thankful for the people I have in my life - and you know who you are. I have two parents who, despite everything they are juggling, took off from work to escort their grown daughter to surgery; a brother who is always on my side; grandparents who always call; a boyfriend who seems to infinitely understand and who has one of the best senses of humor around; and friends who are endlessly interesting, thoughtful and inspiring. I’d like to say hello and a proper good-bye to those in NYC, because I won’t get to see you for a little.
So anyway, I would still be thankful for all of these things even if I hadn’t had the wisdom teeth episode, but the wisdom teeth reminded me and I just wanted to say a proper thanks.
Please keep in touch.
